I got this article on Captain America from somebody on twitter... (from crookedmonkey's Rob, who may or may not have had an LJ at some point) I think it might be of interest to a couple of people here, mainly kruku and possibly scifi_mel

http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2013/10/steven-attewell-steve-rogers-isnt-just-any-hero

The point they're making is that Cap America, contrary to what I always believed, wasn't supposed to be the gung-ho right wing anti-commie hero but rather a progressive, more nuanced left-wing one. Contestable but interesting.

Thanks for posting this.
I have been pointing out that Cap America was a propaganda icon for the Allies World War II effort for ages, to others interested in comics. However I never bothered to push the point that he was also there to support a partnership with communist Russia & Europe (what there was of it at that time). This is partly because most people could not envisage a time when the US had a very close partnership with communist nations and organisations and would argue strenuously against the idea.
But as the US, in an Orwellian frenzy, rewrote history from the 1950's, casting communist Russia & China as the villians on the world stage I wonder if the internet's present dissemination of information is re-writing history yet again?
Will we yet see a Cap America busting knee- caps of dodgy bankers? :)

I find it ironic that he stated in the beginning that seeing things being "off the time" was wrong as the eras were more complicated and then goes on to point out how the the things CA did were off the time. I must admit I can't stand superhero comics. I find them incredibly dull. This kinda sums up why. Propaganda for the US! ;)
