[ Books ] Mongolian Wizard stories, by Michael Swanwick
Liking Tor books more and more. First discovered Elizabeth Bear's fantastic science-fiction stories through a compilation of theirs (and she's on LJ, as matociquala, now Michael Swanwick's baroque stories of a Europe that never was, in the Mongolian Wizard short story series . In contrast to Charlie Stross's 'Laundry' world (which I also quite like), in these demonology is superstition which doesn't work but wizardry does. This.. doesn't sound so good, perhaps like minor harrypottery but here it does work -at least for me, as one should perhaps always say. This is making my coughing and sneezing that bit more bearable tonight.

This made me wonder, when the next instalment of 's 'Dark Eden' story may be coming out..

I downloaded the short story collection when you put up a link to it - thank you - and still only halfway through. There were some absolute gems, very clever - even if I was a bit nonplussed by the "twilight but with mermaids" one at the start :)

Yes, that's true! There's some rather forgettable ones there but also quite a few gems. After that I've bought a few of their books -in a couple of cases, overlapping with that or other of their compilations, but if I like somebody's effort I think I should pay for their product at least insofar as I can... I myself am only half way through that collection, as I've been reading other books as well in the meantime.

Have you read anything by Rudy Rucker or Robert Chsrles Wilson? I've just been introduced to them and can't believe I missed them before. RC Wilson is easier on the brain, Rudy Rucker is sort of psychadelic :)

Wasn't aware of either of them, will investigate, thanks! :)

It's all thanks to my e-reader :)

The ones I have read and can vouch for are Spin by RC Wilson and Postsingularity by Rudy rucker (also the Ware Tetralogy)
