A good point indeed, and another example of the invisible knapsack of privilege.

I reckon the 'invisible' bit is crucial: people are not necessarily callous or insensitive but rather blind to their own privilege and when this is questioned the first reaction might be 'why, there is nothing wrong' because you cannot see anything wrong -as it doesn't affect you. Of course, some people _are_ callous and insensitive and worse, aware of their own privilege and prepared to climb on ladders of people to keep it.

Thanks for sharing that! Very eloquently said what I've been thinking lately. I got really annoyed yesterday when on a friend's facebook someone was complaining about labels used to identify the LGBTQ community, and the white (i'm guessing straight) male said how it was all pointless cause none of it mattered "outside the bedroom". When YES it matters everywhere! Cause you run the risk of being killed if you let your relationship been seen outside the bedroom, when you have to fight to have your partner be able to get your pension, or visit you in hospital, or be able to go into a place of worship together and simply hold hands the way straight people do without a thought. And not even just queer people but the representation of women in media is horrendous! I decided a couple years ago to only see films that have gender equality on the posters. Let alone one's that can pass the Bechdel test. As such I see one or two films a year.

And, as she says -it needn't be a zero sum game, but that is very difficult for some people to see.

BTW, you probably know this but just in case: Elizabeth Bear is a very good fantasy-SF writer. I love her stuff.

Her name is familiar but I don't think I've read any of her books.
