All this has happened before.. - Echoes of Flavio's Ghost Dreaming

All this has happened before..
Watching some program on the Japanese NHK channel. They wire a moth's brain onto a robot and make it move as it responds to pheromones. They are talking about a flying robot 'controlled' by a fly brain.

I'm sure some of this research may end up being useful -or even very useful (for instance, for disabled people) but, boy, is it creepy.

I think I saw that on a piece about military robots on a current affairs type programme here, if so it's being funded by the US Military and while it may also benefit the disabled it's really not benign.

Ooh, that's pretty cool. They've been doing some crazy stuff with putting computers into rats brains lately that's creepy as hell.

How do we tell the people in the white coats that enough is enough (is enough...)
:)

Mind you, I'm in two minds about this -I'm far more wary of the current anti-science public mood than of the mad irresponsible scientist stereotype.

Well, me too obviously :)
The current climate change denial problem seems to be founded on...because 10% of climatologists are sceptics, therefore scientists can't agree or be sure of anything therefore there's an equal chance they're wrong. It's such flawed logic but that's how it seems to me the public generally assesses science.
It's the same argument creationists use to to dismiss evolution.
I went out for a fag during that song at the gig. As a student I thought it was cool to have NMA guiding my ethical development as a student. 18 years on I find the negativity of "Whitecoats" a bit irritating :)

It's on Freesat. There is a communal satellite dish in the building so I bought the cheapest most basic freesat box.

I don't think it is on Freeview, none of the foreign channels seem to be.
